Freedom of expression in India threatened
by new rules on web content

In 2011 the Indian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (Department of Information Technology) published the Information Technology Rules, 2011 laying down rules regarding the content of websites. The New York Times published the article "India puts tight leash on Internet free speech". Also the Indian media did report on this subject, while various social organizations expressed their deep concern about the very restrictive rules. The new rules allow officials and private citizens to demand that Internet sites and service providers remove content they consider objectionable on the basis of a long list of criteria.
